Present Continuous Tense Exercise with Answers | 100 Exercise Question

The Present Continuous Tense describes actions that are happening at the moment of speaking, an event that is taking place now, around the current time or ongoing actions that are occurring around the present time.

Use Present Continuous Tense

The Present Continuous Tense is used for expressing an action or an event that is taking place now (at the time of speaking). The Present Continuous Tense is also known as the Present Progressive Tense.

The Present Continuous Tense is formed by using ‘be’ am / is / are + main verb with ‘ing’.

e.g.

i) I am reading a book now.

ii) He is reading a book now.

iii) The boys are playing football at the moment.

Remember –

* I am = I’m

** He / She / It = He’s / She’s / It’s

*** We / You / They = We’re / You’re / They’re

Present Continuous Tense Formula

The Present Continuous Tense Formula or Structure is mentioned in the table below –

Structure / Rule	Subject + am/is/are + verb (-ing) + Object	Keywords – Now, Still, At the moment, At present, Today, In the picture etc.
Affirmative / Positive Sentence	Subject + am/is/are + verb (-ing) Object	I am going to school. or I am reading a book.
Negative Sentence	Subject + am/is/are + not + verb (-ing) + Object	I am not going to school. or She is not watching TV.
Interrogative Sentence	WH + Am/Is/Are + subject + verb(-ing) + Object?	Are you going to school? or Are you coming to the party? or Why is he laughing?

1. Present Continuous Tense Affirmative Sentences

Affirmative / Positive Sentence Structure

Subject + am / is / are + verb (-ing) + Object

i) The Students are going to school.

ii) He is drawing a picture.

iii) Neha is singing songs very well.

iv) He is going home.

v) Cristiano Ronaldo is going to school.

vi) Cristiano Ronaldo is playing football.

vii) Tom and Anna are talking in a cafe.

Remember – Using ‘be’ am / is / are

* I = am

** He / She / His / It = is

2. Present Continuous Tense Negative Sentences

Negative Sentence Structure

Subject + am/is/are + not + verb (-ing) + Object

i) The Students are not going to school.

ii) He is not drawing a picture.

iii) Neha is not singing songs very well.

iv) He is not going home.

v) Cristiano Ronaldo is not going to school.

vi) Cristiano Ronaldo is not playing football.

vii) Rabindranath Tagore is not going to the school.

viii) I am not making naughtiness.

x) He is not coming here daily.

xi) Rice is not growing in Britain.

xii) Jane is not drinking tea.

xiii) I am not going.

xiv) They are not playing football.

Remember – short form am / is / are not.

* am not = amn’t

** is not = isn’t

*** are not = aren’t

Interrogative Sentence Structure

WH + Am/Is/Are + subject + verb (-ing) + Object?

i) Are the Students going to school?

ii) Is he drawing a picture?
